Dress for less

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, especially when it comes to “the dress.” It’s not uncommon to spend $400 or $500 to buy a formal dress for prom that a young woman will wear only one night for a few hours. For some, that cost is just too much.It can be so expensive, so outrageous,” said Morris Community High School PromFest Committee member Terri Hogan, “especially in this economy.”

Some girls choose not to go because of the cost, Hogan said. That’s why the MCHS PromFest Committee is asking residents to go through their closets this week and pull out any gently-used prom dresses to donate to them. It’s the first year of the “Nearly New Prom Dress Sale,” and the organizers want it to be a big success. The committee will sell the dresses for $25 or $50 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Immaculate Conception School. The money raised will go toward PromFest, which is held immediately after prom, but the goal of the prom dress sale is much more than raising money. It’s about the girls and making prom attire available to those who might not otherwise be able to buy it.

Prom, after all, is about fun and memories during a great time of a person’s life.I know how much fun my daughter had,” Hogan said. “This is the freest, most fun time of their lives, and if I can make it easier for them and make their memories better, I’m all for it.Marie McNelis is also on the committee organizing the sale. She hopes to have a hundred dresses for the sale, if everyone will pitch in.It’s mostly girls who have just graduated or are ready to give up their dresses,” she said of the dress donors. “Most of them are prom-style dresses, but we have also been given some homecoming-style dresses.”

So far, McNelis said they have a little bit of everything, from long “princess poufy” dresses to ones with more slender skirts and short dresses. They have sizes ranging from 2 to 20 in all different colors.

[...] Carmen Marc Valvo’s runway wended through an atrium above Times Square like the python that inspired his couture cocktail dresses and evening gowns, some of which he hopes will land on red carpets.Playing on the light and shadow of film noir, Valvo honored Lauren Bacall in his fall collection with a palette of ivory, black, camel and deep reds and browns. He used illusion effects, sheaths sparkling in sequins and insets in a suede python print on waists, chests and backs. What does he like best about Bacall? “Her uncomplicated sense of glamour and sophistication. It’s a collection that has a lot of polish. It’s very clean-lined, Dress for less [...]
